Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate underground trucks to load, haul and dump materials.This unit applies to those working in site-based roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors, and must be sourced from state jurisdictions prior to applying this unit.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan and prepare for underground truck operations
  • Access, interpret and apply underground truck operations documentation
  • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • Identify hazards and environmental issues, assess the risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies
  • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • Inspect and assess site conditions to determine if scaling is required and take action according to workplace procedures
  • Apply approved dust suppression and extraction methods
  • Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement of work activity
       
Element: Load material in line with established requirements
  • Carry out prestart and start-up checks in line with workplace procedures
  • Identify faults or defects and rectify or report within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures
  • Drive and operate truck using techniques suited to equipment capabilities, site and work conditions, and according to workplace procedures
  • Check work area for spillage prior to entering the loading area to prevent plant and tyre damage
  • Position truck for loading clear of services
  • Remain in truck when loading or at safe distance from loading operation
       
Element: Haul material in line with established requirements
  • Confirm type of material and haul to designated location
  • Maintain hauling efficiency by managing working environment
  • Monitor and manage equipment performance using appropriate indicators to aid efficient operations
  • Identify, remove, and dispose of contaminants
  • Identify and manage spillages on hauling surface
  • Check tray position according to workplace procedures before equipment is in motion
       
Element: Discharge material in line with established requirements
  • Check safety provisions are in place before entering and leaving tipping site
  • Position truck in safe area
  • Discharge load according to workplace procedures
  • Lower or retract tray fully according to manufacturer requirements and workplace procedures before driving off the tipping area
  • Park up, shut down, secure and carry out post operational inspection of equipment in line with workplace procedures
       
Element: Conduct housekeeping activities
  • Clean equipment to maintain condition of equipment and ensure safe and efficient operations
  • Manage and/or report hazards to maintain a safe working environment
  • Complete and file or distribute documentation in a manner that complies with workplace practices

Assessment Tasks
